Tourist Guide - Alburgh (which recently was known as Alburg) is a small town in the far northern part of Vermont, straddling the United States border with Canada. It is virtually surrounded by the waters of Lake Champlain, being located on a peninsula that runs south into the lake out of Quebec. You can stay at one of several Alburgh bed and breakfasts or Alburgh inns, where you can relax in the comfort of country living, or foray out to enjoy such activities as hiking, fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, biking, or bird watching. If you are fond of stargazing, you will love the clear nights of just lying down and looking up at the spectacle of the stars. Ask the hosts of your Alburgh inn or bed and breakfast if they offer a viewing platform from which you can do this. Fall is a lovely time of the year in Alburgh. It is especially rewarding to go leaf peeping as the leaves change into autumn colors from the middle of September to the middle of October, and it is something you can enjoy without going far from the Alburgh bed and breakfast where you are staying. Fall is also a good time for you to visit
apple orchards and join in the apple festivals. In the winter, you can spend the daytime cross-country skiing, returning in the evenings to the cozy warmth of your Alburgh lodging. From Alburgh it is only four miles to the Missisquoi Nature Sanctuary, a place that offers lovely nature walks on its trails. Also nearby is
St. Anne's Shrine on Isle La Motte. St. Anne was Vermont's first settlement, founded in 1666, and the first mass in Vermont was also held there. St. Anne has relaxing picnic areas and a beach, said to be the site of Samuel de Champlain's first landing.
